Things To Know and Do Before Any Ride

Spring has spung and everyone is anxious to get out on the trails. There are things each of us should do before we go out on any ride. Many times things can turn out very different than what we anticipated. We should be prepared for equipment failure, personal injury or just being on the trail longer than we anticipated and don’t forget about changes in the weather.

Always check the following before you leave.

* Tires and wheels for proper pressure, wheel damage and make certain all lug nuts are tight.

* Check all cables for binding or obvious wear- Does everything work?

* Check your fuel and oil, make certain the levels are correct. Your air filter should be clean.

* Check chassis, drive train and or chain for broken or worn parts and adjust before you go.

* You should always have your helmet with you and wear it.

* Eye protection is a good idea, especially if you are riding in a group. Sun glasses should be used in sun and bright snow.* Gloves will help prevent your hands from getting sore and provide protection in case of an accident.

* Proper shoes are a must. Good boots will help prevent injury. Flip-Flops and sandles are just not a good idea ever.

* Wear proper clothing and sun screen to prevent sunburn. Carry a rain coat.

* Emergency kits are a must. You should have a CO2 cartridge kit for tire inflation, first aid kit, 50" of rope, spare spark plug, some simple tools for minor repairs, flashlight, pocket knife and a cell phone is always a good idea.

* Every rider should carry one gallon of water per day and drink it, especially in hot weather. It would also be a good idea to include energy bars or snacks, just in case you end up out there longer than you thought.

* Ride preparation should include a ride plan. You should identify the trails you are planning to ride. Let family or neighbors know where you are going, so if an emergency does develop, they will know where to look. You should never ride alone. If you are with a group stay together. Any problems we have ever had has been when the group has been split up. Stay safe, stay together.

* We all have a personal responsibility to know where we are riding and stay out of closed areas. This includes reading trail signs and obeying the law.

* Be a responsible ATV rider and tread lightly. This means respecting the rights of others. Respect public and private property. Always park considerately, taking no more space that needed and not impeding access to trails. Slow down and use caution when overtaking another ATV or any other person. Do not disturb wildlife. Pack everything out that you packed in. Picking up extra litter is always a good idea. Motorized trail users should pull off the trail and stop their engines when encountering horseback riders. It is also a good idea to take off your helmet and greet the riders.
